In the summer of 2010 I went to be a Guide at Deerfoot Lodge in the aderondak mountains. I joined 18 other young men my age and 3 leaders who became out parents for those 8 weeks. The summer was split up into 4 sections or sessions that were about two weeks long. each session was a different phase in our training to be counsolars at Deerfoot.

The first session was spent learning and getting in shape. we all learned lifeguarding, wilderness first aid and CPR.

The second session we packed up our stuff and went hiking in the High Peaks for a while. The first week we were in groups of 7 with one of the leaders incharge. We all ended up at the ADK lodge in the northern High Peaks for a resuply. the second week we devided up into groups of four with a leader shadowing us. This was a time of intense physical training.

The third session we spent canouing in the Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada. the first day we were there we portaged a 5K, that is about 3.5 miles. We each had about 20 pounds of personal gear, and an 80 pound canoue between two people. also we had a 200 pound meet cooler, a 90 pound bread box, two 90 pound food bags and sevral equipment bags. All this stuff had to travel the 3.5 miles on our backs.

About half way through our time in canada we had a solo. A solo is a time of fasting in the wildernes. all we had when we went out was a Bible, a tarp, a sleeping bag, some twine and some water. this was an amazing time, i can't describe what it is like.

The final session we were co-counsolars in cabins. I was put in a cabin with 4 campers, they were a lot of fun. I learned a lot during this time because the other sessions it was just a lot of hearing about what it is like top be a leader but in the fourth session we had to find out what it really ment to be a leader.
