Background

Tim McGraw was born Samuel Timothy McGraw in 1967. His mother was a waitress who had an affair with a major league pitcher named Frank McGraw, also known as Tug McGraw. He was born in Delhi, Louisiana. For the first eleven years of his life, Tim beleived his stepfather was his biological father until he found his birth certificate in a drawer while looking for pictures for a school project. When he confronted his mother with this information, she took him to see Tug. Tug insisted he was not Tims father for 7 years. When Tim was 18, Tug saw how much Tim looked like him and he admitted to being his father. They remained close until Tug died in 2004. Tim and his mother went to Florida where he attended Florida Community College at Jacksonvile. Tim says that his roomates would hide his guitar because he was so bad. When his hero Kieth Whitley died, Tim dropped out of college and went to Nashville to pursue a music career. No one would expect that one of the biggest country music sensations of all time would come from this college drop out.
