Background
Alabama is a talanted group from Fort Payne, Alabama. Lead singer Randy Owen and his cousin Teddy Gentry, who played bass, and other cousin Jeff Cook who played guitar, fiddle, and keyboard formed the band in the late 60's called Young Country. The band bagan playing in local bars in the evenings while they kept their day jobs. While Owen and Cook attended college, the band took a break, but reunited in 1972 under the name Wildcountry. In 1973, Owen and the band decided to make the band a profesional career. Later the name Alabama was chosen for the band. In the next few years Alabama would go through five drummers, but in 1979, Mark Herndon was hired. These four would remain Alabama for the rest of its career. There first album, My Home's in Alabama, had there first single, "I Wanna Come Over", which reached 33 on Billboards country chart. Also on that album, "My Home's in Alabama" became their signature song and reached the Top 20 in 1980. From these humble beginnings came a band that was one of the best country bands of all time and would change the genre forever. |
